The Role of Contractors in Achieving India’s Gas-Based Economy Vision

India is on a transformative journey toward becoming a gas-based economy, aiming to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix from the current ~6% to 15% by 2030. This ambitious goal supports cleaner air, reduced carbon emissions, energy security, and sustainable growth. But while policymakers set the vision and energy companies provide the gas, it is the contractors who physically build the backbone of this transformation.

In this blog, we explore how infrastructure contractors like Oceanic Infra Private Limited play a crucial role in realizing India’s gas-based future—from laying pipelines to enabling city gas distribution (CGD) access in urban and rural areas.

Understanding the Gas-Based Economy Vision

India’s transition to natural gas is driven by several goals:

  • Reduce dependence on coal and oil
  • Promote cleaner fuels for households, transport, and industry
  • Meet global climate targets (e.g., Paris Agreement)
  • Expand energy access across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities
  • Lower import bills and promote domestic production

To support this, the government—through the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB)—has authorized over 400+ geographical areas (GAs) for CGD expansion across India.
